Free Style 5.4e

XTERRA Fitness Free Style 5.4e Elliptical Trainer

The Free Style 5.4e is an entry-to-mid-range elliptical by Xterra Fitness. It is one out of 4 models introduced in the latest generation. The other models include FS 4.0e which is an entry level machine, the 5.6e positioned in the mid-range, and the 5.8e is Xterra’s top model. You’re invited to see them compared side-by-side here:

Compare Xterra Free Style 4.0e vs. 5.4e vs. 5.6e vs. 5.8e.

The FreeStyle 5.4e provides a big step up from Xterra’s lower model FS 4.0e. The main addition is the powered incline feature which is more than nice to have. This elliptical trainer provides a non-impact, total body workout that will target a wide range of muscle groups, when used effectively.

With 20 levels of best in class electronic incline (ranging from 1.6 to 13.75 degrees) combined with 20 levels of resistance, this elliptical trainer provides a non-impact, total body workout targeting a wide range of muscle groups.

It takes ambition to start going the path toward better health and fitness, and the Xterra Fitness FS5.4e Elliptical Trainer delivers a good platform to start the journey taking it one step at a time.

Top Features

Biomechanically Adjusted Foot Pedals

We don’t walk the same, so this machine was designed with pedals that have a 2 degree inversion on them. This means they slope inward slightly to imitate your natural move while exercising, so the exercise will not stress your joints as much. The oversized pedals are padded providing additional comfort as you ride.

Console and DisplayXTERRA Fitness Free-Style-5.4e Display

In a big jump from an entry 4.0e model, the 5.4e features a variety of information that is clearly presented on a 6.5″ wide-screen blue-backlit LCD display. The display shows workout information for 5 preset programs, 2 heart rate programs and 2 user customizable programs in addition to controls for 20 electronic levels of incline for a variety of workouts.

It allows for easy monitoring of your pulse, speed, RPM, distance, level and all the other information you need to know during workout.

It comes with a built-in heart rate receiver and an optional Telemetric chest strap, so you can easily observe your training heart-zone while keeping your eyes on the finish line.

One of the unique programs available on this elliptical is the glute blast. Glutes are your buttock muscles and this program was designed to exercise them. I especially like this programs since it gives your lower body a fantastic workout that will burn fat, tone your buttock and lower leg area. It’s not something commonly available on other ellipticals.

Motorized Power Incline

With 20 levels of both incline and resistance, XTERRA FS 5.4e delivers whatever level of challenge you’re looking for, allowing for simple and easy adjustments right from the handlebar mounted remote controls.

Durability and Operation

Though the XTERRA Free Style 5.4e was designed for durability and quiet operation, its platform not as durable as the one provided in 5.6e and 5.8e models. All Xterra ellipticals use sealed commercial bearings and premium bushings in pivot points providing smooth workouts. This machine is equipped with friction-free magnetic resistance system that assures quiet operation.

Feature Summary

With 9 programs powered by 20 levels of both incline and resistance you have plenty of workout routines to chose from. The console speakers and an audio input jack let you listen to your favorite music while you exercise. Oversize pedals provide 18″ stride and a 2° inversion contributing to promoting optimal body alignment, and the 21 lb. flywheel system offers consistent and smooth operation. Workout fan is a good addition to feel the breeze during workout.

SummaryXterra Fitness FS5.4e Elliptical Trainer

The Free Style 5.4e is an upgraded version from Xterra’s 4.0e model. It comes with better display console, more workout programs and easily controlled power and incline ramp. There are really no significant performance or stability drawbacks and therefore this elliptical is one of the better performers within entry to mid-level category.

Though not a club level machine (just to set the expectations right), the Free Style 5.4e is one of the better ellipticals within its price range. It comes with a good range of workout programs, an incline capability and 20 resistance levels. It offers a pretty good price-performance, but for additional $50, I’d recommend to consider the 5.6e model, since its stride length was increased to 20″, it supports 375 lbs weight capacity and uses a more solid platform, proven by an extraordinary 5 years warranty on parts.
